The Big Tit Trail

The Big Tit Trail

A flicker of movement in the canopy, a sharp call from a moss-covered branch, a small bird appearing for just a few seconds before vanishing into the foliage. On Big Tit Trail, every forest holds the promise of discovery. Journey through Bhutan’s changing Himalayan habitats, from warm subtropical woodlands to cool temperate forests and mountain slopes, searching for the remarkable variety of tit species that inhabit these landscapes. Follow their calls, scan mixed feeding flocks and watch the branches closely. Sometimes, the most rewarding discoveries come from knowing where to look and waiting for the forest to reveal its secrets. This specialized Bhutan birding tour offers dedicated birdwatching opportunities across diverse ecosystems.

The adventure extends beyond the tits themselves. Each new habitat brings different birdlife, unfamiliar calls and unexpected encounters, making every stop an opportunity to discover something extraordinary. Explore celebrated birding areas with experienced local guidance, learning to distinguish species through their markings, movements and behavior. Whether spotting a familiar tit or finding one you have long hoped to see, Big Tit Trail celebrates the excitement of the search and the unforgettable moment a hidden bird finally comes into view.

What makes this journey different?

Big Tit Trail puts Bhutan’s fascinating tit species at the center of a dedicated birding adventure. Carefully chosen birding locations offer opportunities to encounter different species in their natural surroundings. With patient observation and expert local guidance, every forest walk becomes a search filled with anticipation, discovery and the thrill of finding these remarkable little birds.

Itinerary

  1. Day 01: Guwahati – Samdrup Jongkhar

    Drive Distance: 110Km | Drive Time: 03Hrs | Elevation: 200m

Your journey begins at Guwahati Airport, where your representative will welcome you before the drive towards Samdrup Jongkhar, Bhutan's southeastern gateway. After completing immigration and customs formalities at the border, you enter Bhutan and settle into a very different landscape. If you arrive early enough, use the remaining daylight for an introductory birding walk around the town and its surrounding countryside, where tropical broadleaved vegetation, cultivated fields and scattered trees create opportunities to encounter birds of the eastern Himalayan foothills.

Although this first stop is not primarily a highland tit habitat, it introduces the lower elevation environments that will provide an important contrast with the forests visited later. Pay attention to small birds moving through roadside trees and forest edges, while your guide helps you become familiar with local calls and feeding behavior.
