Every season brings something different

Bhutan’s birding calendar changes with the seasons, and each one offers something worth discovering. From March to May, spring brings lively forests, with birds becoming more active and vocal as the landscape comes alive. Autumn follows with clearer skies, crisp conditions and excellent opportunities for birding across forests and valleys.

Winter offers a different experience as migratory species arrive from the north and Black-necked Cranes gather in Phobjikha. Summer brings lush, vibrant landscapes, although rain can affect trails and visibility. We help you choose the season that best matches the birds, landscapes and experience you hope to discover.

Know what to look for. Know where to look

Birding is about more than spotting a bird. It means knowing where to look, recognizing a distant call, noticing movement in the canopy and knowing when to pause and wait. Our field guides bring local knowledge, experience and a keen eye to every outing, helping you identify birds by sight and sound while understanding the habitats and behaviors behind each encounter.

They know the forests, valleys and trails, and often know where particular species may appear. Whether you are an experienced birder growing your life list or simply curious about birdwatching in Bhutan, you will have someone beside you who knows what to look for, where to look and when to wait.

Every trail has its own cast of characters

No two birding days are quite the same. Where you go and when you travel shape what you may encounter. Colorful hornbills move through forest canopies, while tiny songbirds hide among branches. Along rivers, you may find water birds, or perhaps the elusive White-bellied Heron beside Bhutan’s waterways. Seasonal visitors bring something different, while rare species can make an encounter memorable.

For each journey, we highlight birds you may see, along with other sightings. Nothing comes with a guarantee, and that is part of the magic. You never know what might appear next, and sometimes the unexpected becomes your favorite moment.

Why birding in Bhutan?

Bhutan offers birders a rare combination of diverse habitats, rich birdlife and landscapes that remain wonderfully wild. A single journey can take you from subtropical forests and river valleys to broadleaf woodlands, pine forests and high Himalayan landscapes, each home to different birds. Rare, restricted-range and seasonal species bring anticipation to every outing, while encounters with the White-bellied Heron and Black-necked Crane can make certain journeys especially memorable.

Yet birding in Bhutan is about more than adding species to your list. It invites you to slow down, listen closely and notice what moves around you. Every trail, call and unexpected sighting reveals another side of Bhutan through its birdlife.

Small group birding

More eyes. Less noise. Better encounters

Birding feels different when the group is small. There is less movement, less noise and more space to pause when something catches your eye. A distant call can be followed quietly, a hidden bird given time to emerge, and everyone gets a better chance to share the moment. Our small groups generally range from 4–12 travelers, depending on the journey, while private departures offer an even more personal experience. With fewer people around, our guides can respond to individual interests, adjust the pace and spend longer where the birds are. It is a quieter way to explore - and often a more rewarding one.
