Leave Phobjikha in the morning and retrace your route through the highland forests towards Lawa La, where oak and rhododendron woodlands offer another opportunity to search for Himalayan birdlife. Move slowly through suitable roadside habitats, listening for calls and scanning the canopy, forest edges and dense undergrowth. Keep watch for Rufous-bellied Woodpeckers, Scarlet Minivets, Fire-capped Tits and other woodland species. As the road descends towards Nobding, the changing vegetation brings fresh possibilities, making unhurried stops worthwhile for keen birders.
Continue towards Punakha, where warmer conditions and the Punatsang Chhu river corridor introduce a different range of habitats. Spend time scanning the riverbanks, exposed rocks and nearby fields for waterbirds, waders and birds of prey. Depending on seasonal conditions, possible sightings include Ruddy Shelducks, Bar-headed Geese, River Lapwings and White-capped Redstarts. Arrive in Punakha with opportunities for further birding around the river before settling into your accommodation for the evening.
