Gangkar Puensum Exploratory Trek

Where Few Have Wandered

The Gangkar Puensum Trek is one of the most beautiful high altitude treks in Bhutan. It is wild, more challenging and rarely undertaken by trekkers. The trek takes trekkers to the highest mountain peak in Bhutan and is the highest unclimbed peak in the world. It takes trekkers though some of the most unforgettable landscape. It is recommended only to those experience trekkers and can be attempted by those who have excellent state of health and fitness.

Best season

Spring | April – June
Spring brings clearer conditions and a fresh sense of life to Bhutan’s high country. As the landscape awakens, the trail offers changing scenery and comfortable trekking conditions before the summer monsoon arrives. This season suits experienced trekkers looking to explore the Gangkar Puensum region when the route is generally more favorable for high altitude trekking.
Autumn | October – November
October to November offers the most suitable window for the trek. Following the summer monsoon, the skies generally become clearer, visibility improves and the landscape takes on a crisp Himalayan character. For experienced trekkers, this period provides favorable conditions to take on the demanding route and explore its remote surroundings.

Itinerary

  1. Day 01: Arrival Paro – Punakha

    Elevation: 1350m | Drive Distance: 125Km | Drive Time: 03Hr

Upon arrival at Paro Airport, meet your guide and driver before setting out for Punakha. The drive takes you from the broad Paro Valley towards a place deeply connected with Bhutan’s history and the formation of the kingdom. As the landscape changes, the journey offers an early introduction to the valleys and mountains that shape the country.

Punakha served as Bhutan’s capital until 1955 and remains closely tied to several defining moments in Bhutanese history. In 1651, Zhabdrung Ngawang Namgyel established the Chhoesid Nyiden, the dual system of government, here. Punakha also holds the distinction of being the place where Bhutanese people elected Gongsar Ugyen Wangchuk as the country’s first king in 1907. The road gradually carries you into central Bhutan, where mountain scenery begins to shape the journey. Settle in and prepare for the trek ahead, and the journey ahead.

  2. Day 02: Punakha – Bumthang

    Elevation: 2600m | Drive Distance: 183Km | Drive Time: 07Hr

Leave Punakha behind and continue towards Bumthang on a scenic journey through Bhutan’s interlocking valleys and mountain passes. The changing landscape keeps the drive engaging as you travel deeper into central Bhutan. Each turn reveals another stretch of mountain country, gradually carrying you towards Trongsa and the historic heart of the country.

On reaching Trongsa, visit Trongsa Dzong, one of Bhutan’s most impressive dzongs. The fortress serves as the administrative headquarters of Trongsa Dzongkhag and the center of the monastic body for the region. It once held considerable power over central and eastern Bhutan, and both the first and second kings ruled the country from this ancient seat. After exploring the dzong, continue your journey towards Bumthang. The route continues through central Bhutan as you move steadily towards Bumthang.

  3. Day 03: Tharpaling Excursion

    Elevation: 2900m | Walking Distance: 12Km | Walking Time: 07Hr

Begin the day with a drive to Chumey Valley before setting out on foot towards the clustered Tharpaling Goemba. Several monasteries and temples sit across the hillside above the valley, creating a striking setting as the trail climbs. Along the way, you also gain views towards the Domkhar Summer Palace, adding another layer to the landscape and history around you.

The trail continues gently upward to the Shutretse ridge before opening to broad views across the surrounding landscape, with the Black Mountain visible in the distance. From the ridge, turn downhill and follow the trail through rich forests of pine, fir, and rhododendron. The forest gradually brings you back towards the road head, where your transport awaits. Continue by road to your hotel and take time to rest after the day’s exploration. The walk balances history, forest, and wide mountain views, introducing the landscapes around Bumthang as you continue deeper.

The experience

Into the remote

Leave the familiar behind and venture into one of Bhutan’s least visited regions. The trek takes you deep into remote terrain where few trekkers travel. The sense of distance grows with every step, creating an experience shaped by solitude, exploration and the freedom of being far from the usual trekking routes in Bhutan.

The challenge ahead

This is not a trek for casual walkers. The route demands experience, strong fitness and the ability to handle challenging high altitude conditions. Long days on demanding terrain test your endurance and determination, while the changing environment keeps you engaged. Come prepared, and the challenge becomes an important part of the reward.

Towards the unclimbed

The journey leads towards Gangkar Puensum, Bhutan’s highest peak and the highest unclimbed peak in the world. Along the route, dramatic Himalayan scenery unfolds across remote surroundings, creating moments that stay with you. Rather than simply seeing Bhutan, you experience its wild side through a demanding journey shaped by distance, altitude and discovery.
