Sagala Trek

Walk the ancient path between valleys and sky

The Sagala Trek takes you from the quiet valleys of western Bhutan into a landscape of high ridges, alpine meadows and wide Himalayan views. Begin in Paro, cross the dramatic Chele La into Haa Valley, and spend time walking through villages and mountain countryside before reaching the trailhead at Talung. From there, the route leaves the roads behind and climbs steadily into the high country.

The journey unfolds across changing terrain, from pine and rhododendron forests to open grazing grounds where yak herders use the summer pastures. As you gain altitude, the views stretch towards Jomolhari, Jitchu Drake and the mountains surrounding Haa and Paro. After crossing the high ridges, descend towards Chele La and return to Paro. End the journey with a hike to Tiger’s Nest, bringing together Bhutan’s mountain wilderness, village life and sacred landscapes in one rewarding adventure.

Best season

Spring | April – June
Spring brings fresh color to the Sagala trail, with rhododendrons flowering across the forests and warmer days making the higher sections inviting. April and May generally offer good trekking conditions before the summer monsoon arrives. May is the peak month for spring, combining vibrant mountain landscapes with generally favorable trail conditions.
Autumn | September – November
Autumn brings crisp air, drier trails and clearer mountain views, making it a rewarding season for the trek. September can still see occasional rain as the monsoon retreats, while conditions usually settle from October onwards. October is the peak month for autumn, with clearer skies and excellent Himalayan visibility.

Itinerary

  1. Day 01: Arrival Paro

Your journey begins in Paro, where Bhutan’s mountains come into view almost as soon as you land. Meet your guide at the airport and make your way into the valley, with traditional homes, prayer flags and terraced fields setting the scene for the days ahead. After checking into your hotel, keep the afternoon unhurried. Your body has just arrived in a new environment, and there is no reason to fill the day with too much activity.

If you feel like stretching your legs, wander through Paro town or visit a nearby temple. Otherwise, settle into the slower pace of Bhutan, enjoy a relaxed meal and take in your first evening in the valley. Tomorrow, the road leads towards Haa and the mountains beyond. For now, let Paro be your gentle introduction to Bhutan and the beginning of a journey that will soon take you well beyond the valley floor.

  2. Day 02: Paro - Haa - Talung

    Elevation: 2996m | Drive Distance: 65Km | Drive Time: 01Hr

Leave Paro behind and take the winding road towards Haa, crossing Chele La on the way. The climb changes the scenery quickly. Pine forests give way to open slopes, prayer flags flutter above the pass and, on a clear day, distant Himalayan peaks appear beyond the ridges. At nearly 4,000 meters, Chele La offers an early encounter with the altitude and scale of western Bhutan.

From the pass, descend into Haa Valley, where the landscape feels quieter and more pastoral. Spend some time exploring before continuing towards Talung, the gateway to your trek. The road passes through villages, farmland and wooded hillsides, offering glimpses of everyday life along the way. Reach Talung later in the day and settle into your accommodation. With the high trails ahead, use the evening to rest, organize your gear and enjoy the calm before the walking begins.

  3. Day 03: Haa Panorama Hike

    Elevation: 3150m | Distance: 11Km | Walk Time: 05Hr

Today gives you a different way to experience Haa. Begin at Yangthang Goenpa and follow the Panorama Trail through pine forest, open pasture and quiet village paths. Rather than rushing from one landmark to another, let the trail introduce you to the valley gradually. The route passes through Yangthang, Katsho and Juneydrak, where small settlements and sacred places remain closely connected to the surrounding landscape.

As the trail gains height, Haa opens out below you. Pause along the way to take in views towards Meri Puensum and the forested ridges surrounding the valley. Eventually, the path turns towards Wangtsa, carrying you through another mix of woodland and open countryside. This is more than a warm up for the trek. It gives your body time to adjust while allowing you to see a quieter side of Haa, where village life, mountain scenery and old trails naturally come together.

The experience

From villages to high country

Begin among Haa’s villages, forests and open farmland before the trail carries you steadily into higher country. The landscape changes with every climb, moving from pine and rhododendron forest to alpine meadows and wide mountain ridges. You feel the valley falling away as the trail draws you deeper into Bhutan’s mountains.

Mountains that open up

Sagala rewards you with views that grow wider as you gain altitude. On clear days, look towards Jomolhari, Jitchu Drake and the surrounding Himalayan peaks from the high ridges. Walk through open grazing grounds, cross exposed slopes and pause often. Here, the mountains become more than scenery; they shape every step.

A quieter side of Bhutan

This trek takes you away from busy roads and familiar tourist routes into places where mountain life still follows the seasons. You may encounter yak herders using high pastures, pass quiet settlements and share the trail with very few people. The slower rhythm lets you notice Bhutan through its landscapes, people and everyday moments.

Essentials

Altitude & acclimatisation

This trek reaches high elevations, so give your body time to adjust. Spend your first days easing into the landscape before climbing higher. Walk at a comfortable pace, drink plenty of water and listen to your body. Your guide will monitor conditions and help you manage the altitude throughout the trek.

Weather & conditions

Mountain weather can change quickly, especially at higher elevations. Expect cool mornings, sunny afternoons and colder conditions after sunset, with rain or snow possible depending on the season. Pack layers that you can add or remove easily, and keep waterproof clothing close. Flexibility helps you enjoy the trail comfortably.

What to pack

Bring comfortable trekking boots with good grip, warm layers, waterproof outerwear, gloves, a hat and sun protection. A reliable daypack, water bottle, headlamp and personal essentials will make each day easier. Keep your luggage practical rather than excessive. The lighter you travel, the more freely you can enjoy the mountains.

Trail & fitness

The trek combines steady climbs, descents and several days at altitude, so a reasonable level of fitness helps. You do not need to be an expert trekker, but regular walking or hiking before arrival will prepare you well. Your guide sets a comfortable rhythm and allows time for rest along the way.

Guide & mountain support

Your local trekking team stays with you throughout the journey, helping with navigation, camp logistics and changing mountain conditions. Your guide also brings local knowledge that adds meaning to the landscape around you. From reading the weather to choosing a good place to pause, their support keeps the experience relaxed and personal.
