Dagana Trek

Where ancient trails lead into untouched Bhutan

Dagana Trek follows an ancient trade route linking Thimphu with Dagana, taking you along a newly established trail that remains little known and largely undisturbed. Starting from the southern end of Thimphu Valley, the route gradually climbs into the highlands before leading deeper into Bhutan’s remote landscapes. Well paved sections carry you through a rugged and remarkably varied terrain, where dense forests, quiet villages and untouched surroundings create a strong sense of wilderness. Few western travellers have ventured along this route, making the journey feel far removed from the better known trekking trails.

As the trail moves towards Dagana, the landscape changes with the altitude and terrain. You descend through densely forested territory where wildlife thrives, including wild tigers, leopards and bears. Along the way, isolated villages appear among the forests, offering glimpses of a quieter side of Bhutan. With its combination of ancient pathways, forested mountains, remote settlements and limited development, Dagana Trek offers a journey through a lesser known and richly natural corner of the country.

Best season

Spring | April – June
Spring brings fresh color and renewed life to the Dagana trail. Forests turn greener, mountain landscapes feel vibrant, and warmer days make walking pleasant. This is a beautiful time to explore the route as nature awakens, villages remain quiet, and the trail leads deeper into Bhutan’s wild southern landscapes.
Autumn | September – November
Autumn brings clearer conditions and crisp mountain air to the Dagana trail. After the summer rains, the landscape feels refreshed, while forests retain their rich greenery. Cooler days create comfortable walking conditions, and the quieter trail lets you experience the route’s remote villages and wilderness at their own pace.

Itinerary

  1. Day 01: Arrival Paro

Upon arrival at Paro International Airport, your tour executive will greet you and transfer you to your hotel after introduction. Once refreshed, begin a glimpse of the picturesque Paro Valley with a cultural sightseeing tour. Start at the National Museum, where Bhutanese treasures, traditional artwork and historic weapons offer an introduction to the country’s rich heritage. From the museum, take a 10 minute downhill walk to Paro Rinpung Dzong, meaning fortress on the heap of jewels. Lama Zhabdrung built this impressive fortress in 1645, and its architecture provides a striking introduction to Bhutan’s dzongs.

Continue walking downhill to the parking area before driving into Paro town. Although the town has grown from a small village into a busy township, it still follows Bhutanese architectural traditions. You will notice contemporary development alongside traditional forms, giving Paro a distinctive character as you begin your journey. The evening remains free for rest.

  2. Day 02: Hike To Tiger’s Nest

    04Km | 05Hrs | 369m Ascent | 369m Descent | Alt.m 2950m

Start the day early and set out for Tiger’s Nest. The monastery stands at about 2,950 meters above Paro, clinging to a vertical granite cliff above Paro Valley. The hike is an uphill journey that usually takes around three to four hours at an average pace, with the trail gradually gaining elevation through the forested mountainside. Once you reach the monastery, your guide will share its history and explain the significance of this remarkable place.

After exploring Tiger’s Nest, descend to the valley and continue your cultural journey with a visit to Kyichu Lhakhang. Built as early as the seventh century, it is one of Bhutan’s oldest temples and dates from the period of the Tibetan king Songtsen Gampo. The temple forms part of an important early Buddhist history shared with Jambay Lhakhang in Bumthang. Return to Paro after the visit and enjoy a well-earned evening at your hotel.

  3. Day 03: Paro – Gyenekha – Kebchen

    07Km | 04Hrs | 369m Ascent | 369m Descent | Campsite Alt.m 3300m

After breakfast, drive from Paro to the remote village of Gyenekha in Thimphu District. Leave the main road and follow the farm road for about 8 kilometres until you reach Gyenekha Primary School. From the school, descend briefly to a small riverbank, where you meet your trekking team and begin the trek. Cross the suspension bridge and gradually climb through the landscape towards your first campsite at Gur.

Today covers about 7 kilometers, making it a gentle introduction before higher sections begin. Gur serves as a winter pasturing ground for yaks and sits among abundant wildflowers, giant fig trees and juniper forest. As you settle into camp, take time to appreciate the quiet surroundings and the changing mountain landscape. The first day gives you space to find your walking rhythm while moving steadily away from the settled valleys and deeper into the trekking environment that will shape the days ahead.

The experience

An ancient route

Follow an old trade route between Thimphu and Dagana, walking a trail that once connected communities across the mountains. The route carries a sense of history without feeling staged, leading you through changing terrain and quiet surroundings where the landscape, rather than crowds or development, becomes the defining part of your journey.

Into the wild

Move from open mountain landscapes into dense forest as the trail gradually descends towards Dagana. The forest creates a strong sense of wilderness, with rich habitats supporting wildlife including wild tigers, leopards and bears. Walk quietly, stay attentive, and let the changing sounds and surroundings reveal Bhutan’s wilder side.

A quieter Bhutan

Pass through isolated villages and remote landscapes where everyday life feels far removed from Bhutan’s better known routes. Few western travelers have visited this trail, giving the journey a distinctly quiet character. Rather than simply crossing the landscape, you experience a lesser known side of Bhutan through its forests, villages and old paths.

Essentials

Fitness & preparation

Dagana asks you to walk for several hours each day across varied terrain, including steep and uneven sections. You do not need to be an athlete, but good fitness will make the experience more enjoyable. Build your stamina before arriving with regular walks, hills or hikes, and give yourself time to find your rhythm.

What to pack

Pack for changing mountain weather rather than one perfect forecast. Bring sturdy trekking shoes, comfortable layers, waterproof outerwear, sun protection, a reusable water bottle and personal essentials. Keep your daypack comfortable and practical. Your guide can also help you understand what you need for the different conditions encountered along the trail.

Altitude & acclimatisation

The trail gradually climbs to higher elevations before descending through forested terrain, and altitude affects everyone differently. Walk steadily, drink plenty of water and give your body time to adjust. Do not push through unusual symptoms just to keep up. Tell your guide how you feel, and follow their advice throughout the trek.

Trail & weather

Mountain conditions can change quickly, so prepare for more than one kind of day. You may encounter forest paths, rocky ground, steep sections or slippery trails after rain. Good footwear makes a real difference. Carry suitable layers and waterproof protection, and take your time when the trail becomes challenging along the route.

Camping & comfort

Dagana takes you through remote landscapes, where comfort comes in a simpler form. Expect days shaped by the trail, changing weather, quiet forests and isolated surroundings rather than familiar conveniences. Come ready to embrace the outdoors rather than expecting hotel comforts. That simplicity is part of what makes this trek memorable.
