Lingshi Trek

Where high valleys lead you deeper into the wild

The Lingshi Trek ranks among Bhutan’s most popular high mountain journeys, taking you from the northern end of the scenic Paro Valley into the country’s dramatic landscapes. The trail climbs from 2,280 meters to 4,930 meters and beyond 5,224 meters, revealing wide valleys, rich fields and sweeping views of Himalayan peaks. As you move deeper into Jigme Dorji Wangchuck National Park, the scenery becomes increasingly wild, with every climb opening another perspective.

Jangothang Base Camp stands out as one of the finest campsites in the Himalayas, and its one day acclimatization gives you time to settle into the high country. From here, the trail leads across glacier valleys and rugged moraines, then rises over mountain passes. Each ascent brings a view of the surrounding peaks, while the changing terrain keeps the journey engaging. Lingshi rewards you with a trek that feels challenging and deeply connected to Bhutan’s mountain wilderness.

Best season

Spring | April – June
Spring brings fresh color and energy to the trail. Rhododendrons bloom across the lower forests, while clear mountain views open above the valleys. The days feel lively and the landscapes gradually turn greener as the season progresses. Come prepared for changing mountain weather, especially at higher elevations.
Autumn | September – November
Autumn offers crisp mountain air, clearer skies and impressive Himalayan views along this trek route. The monsoon retreats, leaving the trails fresher and the valleys beautifully open. Days feel comfortable for trekking, while mornings and nights turn cold at altitude. Pack warm layers for higher camps and passes.

Itinerary

  1. Day 01: Arrival Paro

Arrive at Paro International Airport, where your local tour executive will welcome you and assist with the transfer to your hotel. Settle in comfortably before heading out to explore the beautiful Paro valley. Begin with Rinpung Dzong, the impressive fortress overlooking the valley, where Bhutanese architecture and history come together in a striking setting. Continue uphill to the National Museum, home to a collection of Bhutanese art, religious objects and cultural treasures.

From the museum, drive towards Paro town and stop at Dumtse Lhakhang, a distinctive historic temple built in the shape of a chorten. Local belief says the temple was built in this unusual form to keep it firmly grounded. Continue back to your hotel afterwards and enjoy a relaxed evening at leisure. Use the time to rest, adjust to your surroundings and prepare for the trekking days ahead, which will take you deep into Bhutan’s high mountain landscapes.

  2. Day 02: Hike To Tiger’s Nest

    04Km | 05Hrs | 369m Ascent | 369m Descent | Alt.m 2950m

Begin the morning with an early start for the hike to Taktsang, Bhutan’s celebrated Tiger’s Nest monastery. The trail climbs through pine forest, with prayer flags, mountain air and glimpses across the Paro valley accompanying you along the way. According to tradition, Guru Padmasambhava arrived here in the eighth century on the back of a tigress and meditated in the cave that now forms the spiritual heart of the monastery.

Spend time exploring the complex, learning about its history and taking in the dramatic setting high above the valley. The present monastery was built in 1694 under Desi Tenzin Rabgye, following the sacred traditions associated with Guru Padmasambhava. After a devastating fire in 1998, the monastery was carefully restored and completed in 2005. Walk back along the same trail to the parking area, then return to Paro for a well earned afternoon and evening at leisure before the trek begins.

  3. Day 03: Hotel - Sharna – Thangthanka

    Elevation: 3570m | Walking Distance: 22Km | Walking Time: 08Hr

Leave Paro after breakfast and drive towards Drukgyel Dzong, the ruined fortress at the northern end of the valley. Take time to explore its remains and hear how Bhutanese forces defended the country against Tibetan invasions. From here, look towards the distant snow covered form of Mt. Jomolhari, a sacred mountain revered as the abode of the goddess Jomo. Continue driving to Gunitsawa village, where the road gives way to the trail and your trekking expedition begins.

The trail follows the valley through repeated ascents and descents, passing flower filled meadows and stands of juniper, while deeper forests bring oak, rhododendron, fir and birch. As the landscape gradually changes, the path descends towards a meadow where your trekking crew will establish camp. If conditions are clear, the campsite offers a memorable perspective of Mt. Jomolhari. Settle into camp, enjoy the surrounding wilderness and prepare for the higher mountain terrain ahead.

The experience

Into the wild

Leave the familiar behind as the trail leads deeper into Bhutan’s remote mountain country. Walk through open valleys, quiet forests and high alpine landscapes where the mountains feel vast and untouched. Here, the journey itself becomes the destination, with every turn revealing a different side of wild Bhutan.

Mountains that stay with you

Lingshi brings you close to some of Bhutan’s most striking mountain landscapes. Watch the terrain shift as you climb higher, with rugged peaks, broad valleys and open skies shaping each day. Take your time, breathe deeply and let the scale of the Himalayas remind you how beautifully small you are.

Life beyond the trail

Meet the people who call these remote valleys home and discover a way of life shaped by the mountains. From quiet settlements to traditional grazing grounds, the trail offers glimpses into Bhutanese life far from the cities. These encounters add warmth, character and meaning to the journey.

Essentials

Prepare for the passes

This trek route takes you over high mountain passes, including Nyile La, so prepare for sustained climbs and thin air. Build your endurance before the trek and keep your pace steady on the trail. Take regular breaks, stay hydrated and let your body adjust as you gain altitude.

Pack for high country

Pack for conditions that can shift quickly as you take this trekking tour. Carry warm layers, waterproof outerwear, gloves, a hat and reliable sun protection. Good trekking boots matter just as much. You will move between forested trails, open valleys and exposed high-altitude terrain throughout the journey.

Expect remote camps

The journey takes you well beyond Bhutan’s settled roads, so expect nights in basic mountain camps rather than comfortable lodges. Bring a warm sleeping bag, headlamp and personal essentials. Your trekking crew manages the camp logistics, while you settle into the rhythm of evenings beneath the high Himalayan sky.

Follow the yak trails

The landscape on this trek supports traditional high-altitude pastoral life, and you may share the trail with yak herders and their animals. Respect their space and keep your belongings secure around camp. Follow your guide, stay on established paths and leave the fragile alpine landscape exactly as you found it.

Respect the mountain rhythm

Remote trekking demands patience. Distances, weather and altitude can influence each day, so keep your schedule flexible and follow your guide’s advice. Walk steadily rather than racing ahead, drink regularly and protect yourself from the mountain sun. On this trek, adapting to the landscape makes the journey safer and more rewarding.
