Druk Path Trek

Walk the ancient path between valleys and sky

Druk Path Trek is one of Bhutan’s most popular short high altitude treks, linking Thimphu and Paro through a beautiful mountain route. The journey begins above Ta Dzong, the National Museum, after a short uphill drive through farmhouses, settlements and apple orchards. From here, the trail leads steadily into the mountains, where rough and sometimes demanding sections reward you with peaceful surroundings and a genuine sense of being away from it all.

Although the trek is well known, the trail often feels quiet, and you may walk for stretches without meeting another trekker. Lush forests of pine, fir, rhododendron and juniper line much of the route, creating a rich green landscape that comes alive in May. Along the way, several high altitude lakes add another layer to the experience, appearing among the mountains as places to pause, take in the scenery and appreciate the character of this Bhutan trek.

Best season

Spring | April – June
Spring brings color. Rhododendrons bloom along the forested sections, while warmer days make the trail pleasant for walking. Clear mountain views often open above the ridges, and fresh greenery returns to the landscape. Expect occasional showers, especially later in the season, so pack reliable rain protection.
Autumn | September – November
Autumn offers crisp mountain air, clearer skies, and excellent conditions for walking the path. As the monsoon fades, the trails dry out and distant Himalayan peaks often come into view. The forests begin their seasonal change, while cool temperatures keep the long climbs comfortable. Pack warm layers for colder nights.

Itinerary

  1. Day 01: Arrival Paro

Arrive in Paro and meet your local guide at the airport, where a short welcome briefing sets the tone for your time in Bhutan. From here, transfer to your hotel and take some time to settle in. Once refreshed, head out to explore Paro Valley at an easy pace, allowing your first afternoon to introduce you to the landscape, architecture, and rhythm of the kingdom. Enjoy a peaceful evening.

Begin with the National Museum, housed within the historic Ta Dzong, before visiting Paro Rinpung Dzong, one of the valley’s most striking landmarks. Continue to Jangsa Dumtse Lhakhang, a small temple with its own quiet character and history. As evening arrives, leave the sightseeing behind and stroll through Paro town. Watch local life unfold around you, browse small shops, and enjoy the simple pleasure of your first evening in Bhutan.

  2. Day 02: Paro – Jeli Dzong

    Elevation: 2490m | Walking Distance: 10Km | Walking Time: 05Hr

After breakfast, leave Paro behind and drive towards the trailhead above the National Museum. Here, the trek begins with a steady climb into the forest. Walk beneath pine, fir, and rhododendron trees as the trail gradually leaves the valley behind. The changing landscape offers a gentle introduction to the days ahead, with birdsong, mountain air, and quiet forest paths setting the pace.

As the trail reaches higher ground, the trees begin to open and views across Paro Valley appear between the ridges. Take your time to enjoy the changing scenery before continuing towards camp. Your first night on the trail brings a sense of being properly away from the valley, with Jeli Dzong standing above the campsite on the ridge. Settle into camp, enjoy a warm meal, and let the surrounding mountains mark the beginning of your trekking journey. Rest well.

  3. Day 03: Jeli Dzong – Jangchulakha

    Elevation: 3790m | Walking Distance: 11Km | Walking Time: 05Hr

Start the morning by walking up to Jeli Dzong, where you can step inside the temple and learn about this historic site. The dzong dates to the fifteenth century and houses a large statue of Buddha Sakyamuni. After exploring the site, return to the trail and continue along the ridge, where the landscape opens into wider mountain views.

On clear days, look towards Mt. Jomolhari and the surrounding Himalayan peaks as you walk. The ridge also offers opportunities to notice Bhutan’s mountain wildlife, particularly birds that inhabit these high forests and slopes. Himalayan Monal and Blood Pheasant may appear along the trail, adding another layer to the experience. Continue through the changing terrain towards Jangchulakha, where the landscape feels increasingly remote and alpine. As evening settles over the mountains, enjoy camp and the quiet atmosphere of another night in the high country.

WHO IS IT FOR?

Essentials

Fit for the trail

The Druk Path is a moderate to challenging high altitude trek, so prepare your body before you arrive. Regular walking, hiking, and cardio training will help you handle long days on uneven ground, steady climbs, and descents. You do not need to be an athlete, but good fitness makes the journey more enjoyable.

Altitude awareness

The trail climbs above 4,000 metres, where your body needs time to adjust. Walk at a steady pace, drink plenty of water, and listen to your body. Your guide will monitor your progress and help you manage the pace. Take any symptoms seriously and never push through feeling unwell.

What to pack

Pack light, but prepare for changing mountain weather. Bring warm layers, waterproof clothing, sturdy trekking shoes, sun protection, a reusable water bottle, personal medication, and a small daypack. Nights can feel cold at altitude, while sunny days can become surprisingly warm. Your guide can advise you on what else to bring.

Mountain weather

Weather can change quickly along the Druk Path, particularly at higher elevations. Sunshine can give way to cloud, wind, rain, or even snow depending on the season. Come prepared for conditions rather than relying on a forecast alone. Flexible plans and suitable clothing help you stay comfortable when the mountains change their mood.

Camping on the trail

The Druk Path uses campsites along the route, giving you a chance to experience Bhutan's mountain landscape after the day's walking ends. Expect simple mountain camping rather than hotel comforts. Your trekking team handles camp arrangements, meals, and logistics, allowing you to focus on the trail and enjoy the quieter side of Bhutan.
