Legendary Snowman Trek

Deeper into Bhutan’s mountain wilderness

The legendary Snowman Trek ranks among the most beautiful and scenic treks in Bhutan. It also holds a reputation as one of the world’s most difficult treks because of its rough terrain and high altitude. The route suits experienced and physically fit trekkers who are ready for demanding days in the mountains. As you move deeper into the wilderness, the trail reveals a captivating landscape shaped by rugged valleys, high passes, and snowcapped Himalayan peaks.

The trail rises from lower valleys into the high country, reaching altitudes from 2800m to 5500m and beyond. You will cover at least 15km each day while crossing more than 10 high mountain passes. Along the way, you may encounter blue sheep, takin, musk deer, snow leopard, red fox, marmot, and other wildlife through Bhutan’s mountains. The combination of demanding terrain, dramatic scenery, and remote wilderness makes the Snowman Trek a truly extraordinary Himalayan adventure.

Best season

Spring | May – June
Spring marks the transition from winter, bringing greener valleys and fresh mountain landscapes to the Snowman Trek. May and June offer a quieter trekking window before the busier autumn season. Expect a mix of cool and warmer conditions at lower elevations, with colder weather still possible across high passes here.
Autumn | September – October
Autumn brings crisp, settled conditions and clearer mountain views to the trek. September and October are especially rewarding for dramatic Himalayan scenery, with the landscape often feeling sharp and open under autumn skies. Temperatures become colder as the season progresses, particularly across exposed high passes throughout the journey overall.

Itinerary

  1. Day 01: Arrival Paro

Arrive at Paro Airport, where our local tour executive will welcome you and accompany you to your hotel. After a short refreshment, begin your first introduction to Bhutan with a cultural visit around Paro. Start at the historic Paro Dzong, an impressive fortress monastery standing at the head of the valley. Built by Zhabdrung in 1646 after the smaller Hungrel Dzong was presented to him, it offers a memorable introduction to Bhutan’s distinctive dzong architecture and history.

Continue uphill to Ta Dzong, the former watchtower that became the National Museum in 1967. Its collections bring together art, religious antiquities, historic relics, and ancient warriors’ armour, offering a closer look at Bhutan’s cultural heritage. Later, drive downhill to Paro town and take a leisurely stroll through its streets. Return to your hotel in the evening and enjoy a relaxed evening before your journey begins, surrounded by the quiet charm of Paro.

  2. Day 02: Hike To Tiger’s Nest

    04Km | 05Hrs | 369m Ascent | 369m Descent | Alt.m 2950m

Start early for your first demanding walk in Bhutan, following the trail towards the iconic Tiger’s Nest Monastery. The climb steadily winds through the hillside before revealing one of the country’s most spectacularly placed monasteries, perched dramatically against the cliff face. Recognized as an important Himalayan pilgrimage site, the monastery offers a powerful introduction to Bhutan’s spiritual landscape. Take time to explore the site and appreciate the setting before beginning your descent.

Follow the same trail back towards the parking area, then continue by road to Kyichu Lhakhang. This historic temple dates back to the seventh century and was built by Tibetan King Songtsen Gampo as part of his efforts to pin down the evil spirit believed to roam the Himalayas. After exploring the temple, return to your hotel and enjoy the remainder of the day at leisure. Rest well and prepare for the journey into Bhutan’s remote mountain wilderness.

  3. Day 03: Hotel - Sharna – Thangthanka

    Elevation: 3570m | Walking Distance: 22Km | Walking Time: 09Hr

After an early breakfast, drive north of Paro to Gunitsawa village, where your trekking team will be waiting. Meet the team, make your final preparations, check your gear, and begin walking into the mountains. The trail leads through meadows dotted with flowers and medicinal plants before entering deep forests of oak, fir, birch, and rhododendron. The changing vegetation clearly marks the beginning of your journey from the cultivated valley into wilder mountain country ahead.

As the trail continues, you gradually descend towards a long meadow where your trekking team will have established camp. The surroundings become increasingly peaceful and remote as the forest opens into wider mountain landscapes. If the weather is clear, you may catch your first glimpse of the tip of Mt. Jomolhari, an exciting reminder of the high country ahead. Finally, settle into camp, enjoy the peaceful surroundings, and prepare for the longer days deeper in the wilderness.

The experience

Go deep into the highlands

Push beyond the ordinary as the Snowman Trek takes you deep into Bhutan’s remote highlands. Long days lead across rugged terrain, open valleys, and high mountain passes, with every stage demanding focus and steady effort. The reward comes in landscapes, quiet surroundings and Himalayan views far removed from everyday life.

Follow a trail shaped by altitude and wilderness. As you cross more than ten high mountain passes, the landscape changes from rugged valleys to snow covered peaks and remote mountain country. The demanding route keeps you engaged, while each climb and descent brings another perspective on Bhutan’s extraordinary highland terrain.

Watch for wildlife

Keep your eyes open as you move through Bhutan’s remote mountains, where wildlife may appear along the trail. Blue sheep, takin, musk deer, snow leopard, red fox, and marmot inhabit these landscapes. Encounters remain unpredictable, but the possibility adds excitement to a trek defined by wilderness, challenge, and discovery throughout.

Essentials

Physically prepare

The Snowman Trek demands strength, stamina, and resilience. Prepare well before you arrive, with regular hiking, uphill walking, and longer days on your feet. Previous trekking experience helps, especially for the sustained effort required at altitude. Come ready for challenging terrain, changing conditions, and demanding days in the mountains.

Pack for the mountains

Pack carefully for a trek that moves through remote and high altitude terrain. Bring warm layers, reliable trekking footwear, rain protection, personal essentials, and everything you need for changing mountain conditions. Keep your main belongings organized for the journey, while carrying a daypack with essentials you need close at hand.

Be ready for altitude

Altitude plays a major part in the Snowman Trek, with the route reaching elevations of 5,500m and beyond. Move at a steady pace, listen to your body, and allow yourself time to adjust. Good preparation matters, but so does knowing when to slow down and respect the mountain.

Expect changing weather

Mountain weather can change quickly, particularly across the high passes. Prepare for cold temperatures, wind, rain, and possible snow as you gain elevation. Dress in layers so you can adjust throughout the day, and keep essential weather protection accessible. Flexibility is important when conditions influence the pace or route.

Come ready for remote travel

The Snowman Trek takes you deep into remote mountain country, far from everyday comforts and easy access. Expect simple conditions, long trekking days, and limited conveniences along the way. A flexible mindset makes the journey easier. Travel light where possible, stay organized, and embrace the simplicity that comes with wilderness.
