Masagang Trek

Follow the trail into the wild heart of the Himalayas

The Masagang Trek takes you deep into the remote highlands of northern Bhutan, where rugged trails lead through the ancestral homeland of the Layap people towards the spectacular landscapes beneath Masagang. Begin in the lush valleys of Punakha and Gasa before ascending into a world of alpine meadows, glacial streams and vast mountain wilderness. As the trail climbs towards Laya, the changing scenery reveals a quieter side of Bhutan, far removed from its familiar valleys and well-travelled routes. Along the way, experience the warmth of traditional Layap hospitality and discover a way of life shaped by the mountains, the seasons and a deep connection to the land.

Beyond Laya, the journey continues towards the remote high-altitude camps of Kullu Khar and Nulithang, bringing you closer to the dramatic peaks of the northern Himalayas. Each day rewards your effort with sweeping mountain views, fresh alpine air and a profound sense of remoteness. Challenging yet deeply rewarding, the Masagang Trek is an adventure for those who want to venture beyond the ordinary and discover Bhutan on foot.

Best season

Spring | April – June
Spring brings fresh color to northern Bhutan, with blooming rhododendrons, greener forests and alpine meadows awakening after winter. Clear mornings may reveal Himalayan views as you trek towards Laya and the remote camps beneath Masagang. It is a rewarding season for mountain scenery and cultural encounters.
Autumn | September – November
Autumn brings crisp mountain air, clearer skies and sweeping Himalayan views to the Masagang Trek. With the monsoon behind you, drier trail conditions create rewarding days through remote highlands towards Nulithang. October is particularly appealing for mountain panoramas, though temperatures at high altitude can fall below freezing, especially overnight.

Itinerary

  1. Day 01: Arrival Paro – Punakha

    Travel Distance: 125Km | Travel Time: 04Hr | Elevation: 1300m

Upon arrival at Paro International Airport, meet your guide and driver before setting off towards Punakha. The journey follows winding mountain roads through Thimphu and climbs towards Dochula Pass at approximately 3,100 metres. Pause among the 108 Druk Wangyal Chortens, where fluttering prayer flags and forested slopes create a memorable introduction to Bhutan. On clear days, the pass offers sweeping views of the Himalayan peaks, making it an ideal place to stretch your legs, take photographs and enjoy the mountain air.

Continue downhill through forests and traditional villages as the landscape gradually changes into the warmer, greener Punakha Valley. Follow the road past terraced fields, rivers and scattered farmhouses before reaching your accommodation. Settle in, enjoy a relaxed evening and prepare for the days ahead. The drive offers your first glimpse of Bhutan's varied landscapes, from high mountain passes to fertile valleys, while giving you time to settle into the rhythm of your journey before exploring Punakha tomorrow.

  2. Day 02: Punakha Exploration

    Elevation: 1300m

Begin your day in the beautiful Punakha Valley, where rivers wind through fertile farmland and traditional villages nestle among forested hills. Visit Punakha Dzong, one of Bhutan’s most impressive fortress monasteries, standing at the confluence of the Pho Chhu and Mo Chhu rivers. Walk through its courtyards and admire the intricate woodwork, colourful murals and traditional architecture that reflect Bhutan’s living heritage. Take time to enjoy the riverside scenery and observe daily life around this historic landmark.

Continue to Chimi Lhakhang, a hilltop temple reached by a pleasant walk through fields and a traditional village. The path offers a glimpse into rural Bhutan, with farmhouses, cultivated land and locals going about their daily routines. Depending on your interests and available time, you may also visit the long suspension bridge near Punakha Dzong or enjoy a gentle riverside walk. Return to your accommodation in the afternoon and enjoy a relaxed evening before travelling towards Gasa tomorrow.

  3. Day 03: Punakha – Gasa

    Travel Distance: 70Km | Travel Time: 03Hr | Elevation: 2800m

Leave Punakha after breakfast and travel north towards Gasa, following a scenic road through increasingly remote mountain country. The route passes through small settlements, forested hillsides and traditional farmland as you gradually leave the warmer valley behind. Watch the landscape change along the way, with narrow valleys, steep slopes and glimpses of the rivers that shape this part of northern Bhutan. The drive offers an introduction to the rugged terrain you will explore on foot over the coming days.

Upon reaching Gasa, visit Gasa Dzong if time and local conditions permit. This historic fortress stands above the surrounding valley and offers a striking view of the mountains and settlements below. Use the remainder of the day to settle into your accommodation, check your trekking equipment and prepare for the journey ahead. Your guide will review the arrangements for the road transfer to Taktse Maka, trekking permits and camping logistics.

There are no roads or busy schedules, only rugged mountain terrain, sweeping views and the steady rhythm of your footsteps. With Masagang and neighbouring peaks rising around you, each day brings a deeper sense of remoteness. Here, the reward lies not only in reaching your destination, but in experiencing the wild heart of Bhutan along the way.

Essentials

Fitness & preparation

Masagang is a demanding high altitude trek that requires good fitness, stamina and confidence on rugged mountain trails. Expect long walking days, sustained climbs and challenging terrain in remote areas. Prepare with regular hikes, hill walks and stair climbing before arrival. Building endurance beforehand will help you manage the demands and enjoy the journey more fully.

What to pack

Pack for cold temperatures, changing mountain weather and several days away from everyday comforts. Essential items include sturdy trekking boots, warm thermal layers, a waterproof jacket and trousers, sun protection, a reusable water bottle, personal medication and a comfortable daypack. Good socks, gloves and a warm hat are particularly important when camping at higher elevations.

Altitude & acclimatisation

The Masagang Trek reaches high elevations where thinner air can affect your energy, sleep and overall well-being. Allow time to acclimatise, maintain a steady pace and drink water regularly. Tell your guide immediately if you develop symptoms of altitude sickness. Never ignore worsening symptoms or continue ascending when it is unsafe to do so.

Trail & weather

The route towards Masagang crosses remote mountain terrain, with steep ascents, rocky paths, exposed sections and high grazing grounds. Weather can change quickly, bringing rain, cold winds or unexpected drops in temperature. Appropriate footwear, layered clothing and waterproof protection are essential. Follow your guide's instructions, especially on exposed or difficult sections of the trail.

Camping & comfort

The Masagang Trek takes you into remote mountain country where facilities are limited and nights can be cold. Expect tented camps, simple facilities and meals prepared during the journey rather than hotel comforts. A good sleeping bag, warm clothing and a willingness to embrace the outdoors will make a real difference. The reward is waking in landscapes few travellers experience firsthand.
